Next-gen chromogenic medium CHROMagar™ P.aeruginosa: Results from just 18h

In water testing laboratories, whether analyzing drinking water, process water, or recreational and healthcare facilities, speed and precision are key to make timely informed decision and guide corrective actions.

For years, microbiology teams following standard methods such as ISO 16266 have relied on traditional culture media like CN agar to isolate and count Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The cost of this reliance? Extended incubation periods of 48 hours or more, high labor overhead, common visual ambiguity caused by background flora, and a long and tedious workload to confirm the results.

Today, we are proud to introduce CHROMagar™ P.aeruginosa: a next-generation chromogenic culture medium engineered specifically for the rapid and differentiative detection, isolation and enumeration of P. aeruginosa in water samples.

Next-generation chromogenic technology

Traditional selective media rely on subtle pigment formation and fluorescence under UV light. In real-world testing environments, grown background flora can cover or affect these pigments, leading to ambiguous results and tedious subculture and secondary confirmation tests.

Appearance of different strains of P. aeruginosa on CN agar medium.

CHROMagar™ P.aeruginosa introduces a formula containing a new chromogenic substrate with advanced enzymatic efficiency, designed to target a specific virulence factor of P. aeruginosa.

When P. aeruginosa metabolizes this substrate, the reaction yields distinct red colonies.

Additionally, non-target bacteria are heavily suppressed by an optimized selective mix, ensuring that background flora rarely interferes with the readout.

Benefits for your laboratory

1. Fast results from 18 hours

While traditional methods force 2-3 days wait time, CHROMagar™ P.aeruginosa yields clear, countable colonies from 18 hours. You can set up plates in the afternoon and start reporting results the following morning.

2. Clear and easy colony reading

Forget inspecting faint greenish fluorescence’s under an UV lamp. Target colonies grow in a striking red color that makes reading and counting immediate and unambiguous, even for the less experienced lab techs.

3. Superior selectivity and sensitivity

Thanks to its enhanced selective mix, non-target background flora is effectively suppressed. The medium delivers significantly higher specificity and sensitivity than traditional formulations, reducing false positives and false negatives alike and achieving an outstanding limit of detection for P. aeruginosa.

4. Reduced labor and operational costs

Fewer plates, faster interpretation, and zero tedious subcultures or reconfirmations, translate directly into lower operational and labor costs.
