Emergente c\u00edclicamente, el c\u00f3lera se considera end\u00e9mico en muchos pa\u00edses siendo una enfermedad virulenta que causa diarrea severa y deshidrataci\u00f3n. El n\u00famero de casos de c\u00f3lera notificados a la OMS en 2006 aument\u00f3 considerablemente, alcanzando el nivel de 1990. Alrededor de 240.000 casos fueron notificados en 52 pa\u00edses, incluyendo cerca de 6.300 muertes.<\/p><br><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>V. parahaemolyticus<\/i> y <i>V. vulnificus<\/i> est\u00e1n relacionados en gran medida con las enfermedades transmitidas por el marisco, causando septicemia, infecciones de heridas y gastroenteritis. El CDC inform\u00f3 de un aumento estimado del 47 % en las infecciones de <i>Vibrio<\/i> en EE.UU (1996-1998 y 2008), alrededor de 8000 enfermedades al a\u00f1o. Las infecciones por <i>Vibrio<\/i> tambi\u00e9n se declaran frecuentemente en zonas de Asia y Ocean\u00eda, unidas al alto consumo de marisco. A pesar de que <i>V. parahaemolyticus<\/i> es la especie m\u00e1s com\u00fan que causa infecciones, <i>V. vunificus <\/i>se ha vuelto cada vez m\u00e1s frecuente y en la actualidad se le acharan el 94 % de las muertes declaradas.<\/p><br><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>V. alginolyticus<\/i> es menos com\u00fan, pero es un pat\u00f3geno preocupante para los productores de ostras, ya que puede dar lugar a importantes p\u00e9rdidas de producci\u00f3n.
