The conventional medium for the detection of E.coli O157 is Sorbitol Mac Conkey which has a very poor specificity thus exhibiting the abundance of false positives (Proteus, E.hermanii, etc.). Sorbitol Mac Conkey is also difficult to read because there is a change of colouration in case of prolonged incubation. CHROMagar O157 is a chromogenic medium with an interesting specificity and a very high sensitivity. CHROMagar O157 is very successful in Japan where it finds its main application in the food industry. To increase the specificity for detection of E.coli O157 one can supplement this medium with 2,5mg/L of Potassium Tellurite.
