Use CHROMagar STEC to screen E.coli O104 !

22/08/2011

As you have probably heard these late months, non-O157 ShigaToxin-producing E.coli (STEC) have been responsible for foodborne poisoning outbreaks, among them an E.coli O111 in Japan and these days an E.coli O104 in Germany. Warnings about this potential risk have been reported also by the CDC:

Previous Warnings of the CDC

From a CDC report : « Prevalence of Non-O157:H7 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli in Diarrheal Stool Samples... »  “Disease caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) ranges from self-limiting diarrhea to hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Serotype O157:H7, the most frequently implicated STEC causing hemorrhagic colitis and HUS, has been isolated from large foodborne outbreaks, as well as sporadic cases, in North America and abroad. However, 60 STEC serotypes have been implicated in diarrheal disease, and several non-O157:H7 serotypes have been implicated as the cause of foodborne outbreaks and HUS in the United States, Europe, and Australia. Studies from Canada, Europe, Argentina, and Australia suggest that non-O157:H7 STEC infections are as prevalent, or more so, than O157:H7 infection.”

CHROMagarTM STEC, the worldwide premiere medium to screen E.coli O104

So to address this challenge, CHROMagarTM has been working on a new medium, designed for the detection of STEC (and not only O157!!!). The result of this work is the CHROMagarTM STEC, a highly selective medium, allowing the growth of a majority of STEC strains in mauve colony color, while in general coloring in blue or inhibiting other bacteria. CHROMagar STEC has a good sensitivity and a good selectivity/specificity, making it an excellent tool for large number of samples screening procedures.
